Welcome to the South Asian Corner.🌿
Culturally rooted. Clinically informed. Made for you.
As a South Asian dietitian living and practicing in Canada, I understand the deep connection between food, family, and health in our culture. Our meals carry memories, traditions, and love. But they also come with unique challenges when it comes to health. Navigating concerns like IBS, PCOS, diabetes, or celiac disease within that cultural framework can be confusing – and sometimes overwhelming, especially when the advice we’re given doesn’t reflect the foods we actually eat.

Through my work, I’ve had the privilege of speaking with many South Asian clients across British Columbia – from seniors managing diabetes, high cholesterol, or IBS, to pregnant moms navigating a vegetarian South Asian diet during pregnancy. Time and again, they tell me how much they appreciate being able to speak with someone who truly gets it – someone who knows what a parantha is, understands that “pure vegetarian” actually means lacto-vegetarian (yes, paneer is still on the menu), and can talk with them in English, Hindi, or Punjabi, whatever they prefer.
They’ve shared their frustrations:
- “My doctor told me to cut carbs – but roti is all I eat.”
- “Everyone says eat more protein, but I don’t eat eggs or meat – what am I supposed to eat?”
- “I have diabetes, but I don’t understand how to manage my sugar without giving up rice and roti.”
- “I was told to lower my cholesterol, but I don’t even know what that means for Indian food.”
I hear you. And I’m here for you.
This space is for you.

Tips for eating mindfully without guilt As fall settles in, many South Asian homes in Canada light up with celebration – from Ganesh Chaturthi to Dussehra to Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas. A South Asian Perspective In our South Asian community, digestive issues like gas, bloating, and ‘pet mein jalan’ or ‘ghabrahat’ can often be brushed off as “normal” or something we just live with. But what if these are signs of something more – something like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)? So, What Is IBS? IBS is…

Celiac disease is increasingly affecting South Asian communities in Canada, particularly in BC, where gluten-rich foods are common. Symptoms often resemble other health issues, leading to misdiagnosis. It is crucial to seek blood tests from family doctors, as proper diagnosis can significantly improve health outcomes. Awareness and education are vital for management.
